Prince Harry says his wife broke down crying because of the negative press stories in the run-up to the special.
Meghan Markle Was in Tears Before That Oprah Interview Aired
As cathartic as it may have been to tell her side of the story in that bombshell interview special with Oprah Winfrey, it was also incredibly hard for Meghan Markle to deal with the negative stories that ran about her in the days leading up to it. Prince Harry says things got so bad, he found his wife in tears about it.
"I was woken up in the middle of the night to her crying in her pillow because she doesn't want to wake me up, because I'm already carrying too much," Prince Harry shared in an episode of his new mental health docuseries with Winfrey, The Me You Can't See, per People. "That's heartbreaking. I held her, we talked, she cried, and she cried, and she cried."
He blamed his wife's sadness on the “combined effort of the Firm and the media to smear her,” referring to the royal institution as “the Firm” as he did in that original interview.
Prince Harry described the couple's interview with Winfrey as "about being real, being authentic and hopefully sharing an experience that we know is incredibly relatable to a lot of people around the world despite our unique privileged position."
In early March, ahead of the special, a story circulated first in U.K. tabloids and then internationally that Meghan Markle had “bullied” staff members at the palace, and that one staffer had later made an official complaint. At the time, a spokesperson for the couple responded in a statement: “Let’s just call this what it is—a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation…It’s no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining The Duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and The Duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years.” For their part, Buckingham Palace responded that they would be looking into the accusations.
