She's aware.
Phoebe Dynevor Responded to All the People Talking About Her Neck on 'Bridgerton'
Several Bridgerton fans have playfully called Phoebe Dynevor out for what they call “neck acting." There's even a montage of the actor inhaling and swallowing sharply, thus prominently displaying her neck, that's been viewed over 100,000 times. (You can watch it, below.) It's a fact: The neck can act.
And yes, Dynevor is aware of the chatter. She has a sense of humor about it, too. In an interview with L'Officiel, the breakout star revealed it was her younger sister who alerted her to the conversation about her neck. “I didn't even know I was doing it, but I think with the corset—and my need to express Daphne's anxiety—there was a lot of sort of tense neck action,” she said.
The tension on the show is palpable. Much of Bridgerton revolves around keeping secrets, either literally lying about who is courting whom or just repressing your feelings. “It was about displaying two different emotions and not making her feel like this sort of Disney princess—that everything's great, because she's scared and vulnerable underneath all of that wide-eyed naiveté," Dynevor told L'Officiel about playing Daphne.
So will we see more neck acting from this generation's Neck Streep? “My next project, potentially, is the opposite of Daphne in every respect,” Dynevor told L'Officiel. “I love a good challenge. I love playing Daphne, but I'd really like to just keep doing different things. I'm excited about the prospects.” Maybe this character won't be as stressed-out as Daphne and therefore won't have to strain her neck so much? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
All of this is in good fun, of course. Phoebe Dynevor is a great actor—not just Phoebe Dynevor's neck. She's just especially neck-tastic. Can I get away with saying neck one more time? Neck.
Anyway, time to watch Bridgerton…again.
