Read the First Reactions to Kristen Stewart's Princess Diana Biopic, 'Spencer'

Just give Stewart her Oscar, already!

Reviews are starting to roll in for Kristen Stewart's upcoming Princess Diana biopic—and it looks like we weren't jumping the gun with that Oscar prediction.

For those who don't know, Spencer follows the unraveling of Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage over the course of a weekend in December 1991. “The Prince and Princess of Wales’s marriage has long since grown cold," an official description reads. "Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting, and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”

On September 3, the film premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival with a second showing at the Telluride film festival in Colorado the following day. Here's what critics are saying about Kristen Stewart's performance. No spoilers, promise:

The Hollywood Reporter: “For those of us who have admired the talents of Kristen Stewart since she was not yet even a teenager, it is a joy to be able to share that the 31-year-old’s portrayal of Princess Diana in Pablo Larrain‘s Spencer is truly the fulfillment of her tremendous promise and will almost certainly bring her the first Oscar nomination of her career.”

The Daily Beast: “There is no actress alive today who can hold a close-up like Kristen Stewart. As the camera homes [sic] in, you feel her defenses intensify; it feels, more than anything, like a violation. And it’s why she’s perfectly suited for the role of Princess Diana, the tortured royal felled by a voyeuristic tabloid press.”

The New York Times: “If you’re wondering how a star like Stewart fits into a British drawing-room drama, the answer is that she’s not really supposed to: Diana doesn’t, after all. The princess goes to great lengths to avoid the rest of the royal family, but Stewart as Diana thrives in those encounters, when the contrast between her and the stiff-lipped British cast becomes so palpable that she’s reduced to a trembling mess.”

And, of course, here's what Twitter had to say:
