Sanaa Lathan Credits Her Glowing Skin to This $14 Oil

“I have it all over my house,” says the Hit & Run actress.

One thing's for sure: Sanaa Lathan's new Netflix series Hit & Run will have you guessing until the last possible second. The new action-thriller follows a happily married man whose life is turned upside down after his wife is killed in a mysterious hit-and-run accident in Tel Aviv. Enter Lathan—the main character's former flame who helps him figure out the answer to one increasingly difficult question: Who killed his wife?

“When I sat down to read the scripts, I thought I'd probably read a script a day," Lathan tells Glamour about choosing the project. "I could not get up until I finished those four scripts. I knew right away that it was going to be a good show.” Her character, Naomi, is an investigative journalist who is a “fighter for truth and justice.” But truth is elusive in the Netflix original, and justice isn't exactly black and white.

“There are a lot of twists and turns,” the Love & Basketball actor teases, admitting that she especially loves thrillers despite having starred in almost every genre. And soon, she'll adding another thing to her resume: This year, she'll be directing a feature film.

The multi-hyphenate will helm On the Come Up, based on the Angie Thomas novel of the same name (more on the book later). When it comes to directing, The Affair star admits that goes hand-in-hand with acting. “It's interesting because it's very different and yet at the crux, it's the same; you're a storyteller," she explains. “You're just telling the whole story as opposed to one character's journey. It's all-encompassing and you're the mother of the project and guiding this production.”

Directing was always in Lathan's blood. “It's funny because my dad is a director, and I always said as a girl that I wanted to be a director like my dad when I grow up,” she continues. "Then I got the acting bug and went in that direction. I just think life is funny sometimes how it all comes full circle.”

You might think Sanaa Lathan doesn't have a free moment due to her busy schedule. But when she's home, she's in her favorite pair of shoes or putting on the skincare item she's obsessed with using. Want to know more of her must-have items? Read on for another installment of Your Fave's Faves.

My go-to dog outfits

She hates clothes. There are some pictures of her on my Instagram from when I was shooting in New York and it got really cold. I got her a little down jacket and she looked like she was so miserable… she's so funny. But, she doesn't like the clothes, so we have gotten her some like pink rhinestone collars and little harnesses.

My most-used app

I'm addicted to Amazon Prime. I get boxes all the time that I don't even open. And then when I open them, I don't even remember ordering them. I'll wake up sometimes in the middle of the night and order stuff. It's kind of bad. I need to work on that.

I like to order this gum that I chew called Spry. It doesn't have the aspartame in it or sugar, but I'm a little obsessed with it. It's made with a different kind of sweetener. It's not as bad for you.

I have one Apple Playlist called Feels, which is kind of a mid-tempo that they update every week. I'm constantly getting what's new. Sometimes I listen to pop. Sometimes I listen to R&B. Sometimes I listen to oldies. I'm truly eclectic. When I'm working, I either have silence or there's one that's called Pure Focus and it has no words, but it's kind of cool. You have a little ambient music, but you don't have to be distracted by the words.

My comfiest pair of shoes

I ordered another pair of Birkenstocks because they're falling apart. I don't know what it is. They're not the cutest, but I have to get in them as soon as I get home. I had a black patent leather one that just fell apart and I just ordered another one, so I could have a backup. They mold to your feet or something. It feels good.

I like this organic canola oil. It's on Amazon and it's called Camellia. It's from Sweet Essentials and it's $13.99. I have it all over my house; throughout the day I put it on my face and it's so silky. It makes your skin so supple and moisturized. I love it.

The LaCroix LimonCello is my thing to the point where my mom was like, “You drink too much of that.” [Laughs.] It doesn't have sugar, but I have a little bit of an addiction. At least it's better than soda. I also love Watermelon Wonder Synergy kombucha.

I try to meditate every day. I do transcendental meditation, but I believe they all have benefits. I started meditating seriously about six or seven years ago because I went through a really traumatic period where I wasn't handling, processing all of that well, and started having panic attacks. I had a friend who died suddenly, and it was just a lot. Instead of dealing with it, I kind of just kept working and it caught up with me. I wanted to address it holistically, so I started doing this practice. As soon as I started meditating, it kind of went away. Now, it's just part of my life.

What I'm reading

I'm going to direct one of the books that I'm reading now. It's called On the Come Up by Angie Thomas. She's the same writer who wrote The Hate U Give; a New York Times bestselling author. It's a coming-of-age story, about a 16-year-old rapper who is finding her voice. It's a beautiful script. We'll be shooting later this year, and I'm super excited about it.
