Selena Gomez Just Dyed Her Hair Bright Blonde

It looks amazing.

Blonde for spring? Groundbreaking. Well, it is if you’re Selena Gomez.

On April 23 the pop star debuted her bright hair transformation on the Rare Beauty Instagram account. “New look. Need to pick new Rare Beauty lip and blush shades now 💓,” she wrote.

It turns out this “edgy” style was tailor-made for Gomez by colorists Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri. “We’ve been doing Selena’s color for over a decade now. She typically keeps it pretty natural, but this time she went for a big change,” the Nine Zero One Salon co-owners wrote in a statement. “This blonde is unique to her as we had to make sure there was an equal balance of cool and warm for her skin tone. It’s an edgier look and perfect for summer.”

Like most brunette-to-blonde hair transformations, the process took a while. “The entire process took 200 foils, several bowls of bleach, and 8 hours of hair magic,” they added. Take a look:

Obviously, Selena Gomez is far from the only celeb brightening up their look as we head into the warmer months. In March, Billie Eilish took her brunette and green locks to platinum blonde over the course of six weeks. More recently, Lucy Hale debuted her lemon-honey do after months of subtly lightening her deep brown bob.

What I’m trying to say is that going blonde is a commitment. Remember when Gomez went “Nirvana Blonde” in 2017? That process took “9 hours, about 300 foils, and 8 bowls of bleach, all with 2 stylists working together simultaneously.”

To be honest, whether you wear your golden hair short like Hale’s, XXL like Anya Taylor-Joy’s, or somewhere in between like Gomez’s, bleached manes take a lot of upkeep. To keep your tone bright and battle brassiness, Lee and Capri recommend washing your hair with purple shampoo—more specifically, Joico’s Color Balance Purple Shampoo—every third wash. “Also add to your daily routine lots of In Common’s Magic Myst leave-in conditioner for extra vitamins and shine for the hair,” they said.
