Are you ready to "Spiral?"
Selena Gomez's New Movie Sounds Terrifying
Selena Gomez's next movie sounds freaky, but it has all my faves involved, so I'm just going to be brave. Deadline reports the singer, actor, and cooking show host will star in Spiral, a psychological thriller about “a former influencer whose addiction to social media is causing her body to literally fall apart.” I'm getting Ingrid Goes West and Ashley O. from Black Mirror vibes already.
Melissa Broder, the writer behind the mega-popular Twitter account @sosadtoday, wrote a draft of the script, which has since been rewritten by Phoebe Fisher. Petra Collins, who has appeared on Amazon's Transparent and rose to prominence as an online photographer with work on sites like Rookie, will make her directorial debut. This is basically the film equivalent of the cool art girls table at lunch, and I'm into it.
By the way, if you're thinking, “Scary movie called Spiral? Didn't I already see a trailer for that?” you're not wrong. Spiral: From The Book of Saw is the name of Chris Rock's upcoming entry into the gore horror franchise.
With 222 million Instagram followers, Selena Gomez is certainly believable as an influencer, but she revealed in 2019 she actually doesn't have the app on her phone. "It's just become really unhealthy, I think personally, for young people including myself, to spend all of their time fixating on all these comments and letting this stuff in, and it was affecting me," she said, per Insider. "It would make me depressed. It would make me feel not good about myself, and look at my body differently, and all kinds of stuff."
Sounds like she knows the dangers of social media—and it sounds like Spiral will address those dangers in a chilling, inventive way. Horror movies with a message are always the best. I can't wait to see.
