‘Stranger Things 4’ Just Got a New Trailer and a Release Date

Stranger Things season four is officially happening, Netflix confirmed on Monday, September 30, 2019. The streaming giant revealed the news via a video on the Stranger Things Twitter page. “We’re not in Hawkins anymore,” the message reads as creepy, ominous music plays and the words Stranger Things 4 appear in neon red letters. Netflix released the same video on Instagram as well.
Here’s everything we know about Stranger Things 4 so far:
The first trailer just dropped. On August 6, Netflix released a longer look at the upcoming season, and announced that it will premiere in 2022. Though the trailer begins with a montage of moments from the first three seasons, the second half includes glimpses of the new stuff, from Eleven being held back by men in suits, to a mysterious grandfather clock, and some cheerleaders. But it could be the last season. “We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out,” one of the show’s creators, Ross Duffer, told Vulture in August of 2017.
“I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year,” his brother Matt Duffer added at the time.
That being said, one of Stranger Things executive producers, Shawn Levy, told Entertainment Weekly a month later that a fifth season is definitely possible but probably nothing else beyond that.
Hopper is alive. Based on season three, we already knew there was no body and that the Russians had an American in captivity. In an interview, David Harbour, who plays Hopper, also hinted that the captive American is most likely his character. So rest easy, my friends.
On February 14, 2020, Netflix confirmed that the beloved character is indeed alive with a new teaser titled, “From Russia With Love.” As the camera pans over a snowy terrain, we see guarded prisoners at work. Soon one of them is revealed to be a (now bald) Hopper. But has anyone told Eleven?

Hawkins isn’t the focal point. The end of season three more or less told us this. Remember, the Byerses plus Eleven have moved out of the sleepy Indiana town in light of Hopper’s “death.” Also, the post-credit scene revealed the Russians had acquired a Demogorgon. All of this points to the scope of season four expanding. Also, the new Twitter teaser says, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.”
Karen Wheeler, real estate agent? That’s what Cara Buono, who plays her, is hoping for. “I always thought that Karen was someone who would have gone to law school and be a public defender to give people a voice who didn’t have a voice,” she told Glamour. “Or I thought what would be funny is after everything that happens in Hawkins, because people are moving and real estate has really gone down, she becomes a real estate agent! Like, ‘I know things seem a little unstable here, but now’s a great time to buy!’”

NetflixSteve and Dustin’s bromance will stay constant. “I like to think they’ll continue to grow and move forward as a team, and I’d like to see what new ways they help each other, and then what steps they get to in their relationship where they might not get along,” Joe Keery (Steve) said to Glamour. “That might make them appreciate more the levity in their relationship.”
Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers will try for long-distance. Remember, the Byerses’ move out of Hawkins puts this fan-favorite couple at risk. “We don’t know [what will happen for them], and the past two seasons we’ve basically been filming together constantly, and it’s like, ‘Huh, what’s next season going to be like?’” Natalia Dyer (Nancy) revealed to Glamour. “We’ve been with these characters for three seasons, and we care about them, so I do think whatever happens between them, I hope it’s given time and space and integrity and reality to what they’re going through.”
The episode names. On November 6, 2019, the Twitter account @StrangerWriters revealed the name of season four, episode one: “The Hellfire Club.”

When it does come back, it will be the scariest season yet. “Oh, man, it’s pretty amazing—the Duffer brothers have really done it again,” actor Joe Keery told Total Film magazine in May 2020, per People. “I think that this year—and I know I say this every single year—but this is definitely going to be a lot scarier than prior years, because last year was pretty dark.”
We are getting a slew of new cast members and characters. Here are the descriptions, per a press email from Netflix:
Jamie Campbell Bower will play Peter Ballard, “a caring man who works as an orderly at a psychiatric hospital. Tired of the brutality he witnesses day after day, will Peter finally take a stand?”
Eduardo Franco will play Argyle, “Jonathan’s new best friend, a fun-loving stoner who proudly delivers delicious pizza pies for Surfer Boy Pizza.”
Joseph Quinn will play Eddie Munson, “an audacious ’80s metalhead who runs The Hellfire Club, Hawkins High’s official D&D club. Hated by those who don’t understand him (and beloved by those who do), Eddie will find himself at the terrifying epicenter of this season’s mystery.”
Sherman Augustus, Mason Dye, Nikola Djuricko, Robert Englund, and Tom Wlaschiha will also have recurring roles.
