The 5 Best Body-Positive Moments in 2016 That'll Make The Entire Fashion Industry Proud

This was the most body positive year in fashion ever.

Thanks to forces like Ashley Graham, Christian Siriano, and Lane Bryant, the past 12 months have been full of moments that celebrated size diversity in fashion. Dare we say it: it feels like the industry's finally on its way to becoming genuinely inclusive. While we’re sure you’ve been keeping up with the highlights since January, here's your year-end refresher (because when you read it all together, it's kind of amazing!).

Extended Sizes Hit the Market

First—and most importantly—tons of new plus-size clothing options to hit the market. Siriano and Glamour launched collections with Lane Bryant—and Prabal Gurung announced an upcoming one with the mega-retailer. On the model front, Graham launched lines with Dress Barn and Swimsuits For All; and Jordyn Woods made clothes with BooHoo. Bloggers Nicolette Mason and Nadia Aboulhosn released capsules with Addition Elle; and Essie Golden and Kelly Augustine made a Fashion to Figure holiday selection. Outside of that, Rachel Roy, Rachel Antonoff, Beth Ditto, and Khloe Kardashian released collections that go up to size 24.

Media Made a Move Toward Diversity

And then there was the magazine revolution! Glamour launched our very own Style Your Size column in the magazine, plus a special section on our website—and made an overall push to include models of all shapes and sizes across platforms. To name check a few: Graham, Candice Huffine, Precious Lee, Barbie Ferreria, Sabina Karlsson, Iskra Lawrence, Georgia Pratt, and Jordyn Woods. A big industry-wide win? Diverse magazine covers. Graham covered Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, Self, and British Vogue; Elle championed Viola Davis, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones; Vogue published Adele and Amy Schumer issues; and Marie Claire put Schumer and Gina Rodriguez on newsstands.

Designers Celebrated Plus-Size Models

At fashion weeks, designers started to take action too. For fall 2016, Sophie Theallet, Chromat, H&M, and Eckhaus Latta used plus-size models (all above) in their shows. And for spring 2017, Chromat continued its mission while Christian Siriano made headlines for walking five curvy models down his runway.

Advertising Included Realistic Bodies

When it came to advertising, it seems some brands finally woke up and realized that representing real bodies = sales. Aerie kept on with their un-retouched campaigns of Lawrence; Swimsuits For All made a splash with Graham, Philomena Kwao, and 56-year-old Nicola Griffin; H&M released a commercial with Paloma Elsesser and Katy Syme; Milk Beauty used Karlsson; and Marc Jacobs Beauty shot Ferreira and Diana Veras. Oh, and celebs got involved, too! Lena Dunham appeared in a Lonely Lingerie campaign, while Gabourey Sidibe and Danielle Brooks fronted Lane Bryant's #ThisBody.

Celebrities Spoke Out On Size

Speaking of celebrities: some breakout stars were born. Chrissy Metz made us fall in love with her This Is Us character, Kate; Jones flexed her frustrations about getting dressed on Twitter and had Christian Siriano make her a gown for the Ghostbusters premiere; Schumer posed for the Pirelli calendar; and Meghan Trainor pulled her "Me Too" music video because it was too photoshopped.
