The $9 Foundation Storm Reid Can't Live Without

The actress spills on the her favorite products, the women she looks up to, and her love of Beyoncé.

Like most of us, Storm Reid has had an unusual year. But unlike other 17-year-olds who graduated virtually this year, she's been busy prepping to finally film season two of Euphoria, as well as executive-producing her new Facebook show Chop It Up. Starting this month, she's adding yet another thing to her résumé—as if starring in A Wrinkle in Time and 12 Years a Slave weren't enough—as the new face of Maybelline New York.

“To be able to be a part of such an impactful brand, a brand that's been a part of my life for basically my whole life, it's a really cool feeling,” Reid tells Glamour. The collaboration is a match made in heaven. Just a scroll through Reid's Instagram prove's she's never met a makeup look she didn't like. From bold bright blue liner to a classic red lip, she's tried it all—and she can't wait to get dressed up again. “When the world opens back up and it’s Hollywood’s first party, everyone’s gonna be there, everyone is going to pull out all the stops with their outfits, nails, hair, and makeup, and I will be one of those people because I’m ready,” she says.

We caught up with Storm Reid and chatted about the beauty looks she's currently obsessed with, the women she looks up to most, and the products she can't live without. Read on for her answers to Glamour's Big Beauty Questions.

You're the new face of Maybelline so we have to ask, what's your favorite product from the brand?

I love the Fit Me Foundation. I feel like it’s full coverage but not heavy. I don’t like feeling cakey, and I think it’s got such beautiful coverage. You can have a glowy look or a matte look and you’ll feel like your whole face is covered but there’s not any cakey-ness or lines. Rightfully so, it’s one of their most successful products.

What's one beauty trend you’re obsessed with right now?

Soap brows! I've been seeing them all over TikTok and Instagram. I invested in some soap brow products and have been doing it for the last couple of days, and I love it. Actually, unbeknownst to me—I don't really pay attention a lot when my makeup is being done by my makeup artists Ms. Joanna Simkin and Polly Blanch—they both use the soap brow products. I started asking questions, then did my research on social media, and now we're here.

What beauty rule do you think is B.S.?

I know a lot of people have a problem with fake freckles, but I don't see a problem in it. I think it's super duper cute. Of course, you can go overboard with anything, but I think beauty and makeup are a form of self-expression. Both as a whole in a macro level, but also specifically to me, so for you to tell me that I can't use a certain product or do something with a certain product is weird to me.

What's the best beauty advice your mom ever gave you?

She's always said and says to this day that beauty has nothing to do with your outward appearance. It's all internal. And of course, you can be a beautiful girl, the most gorgeous girl in the world, but if your soul isn't beautiful and if you don't try to be a good person [then you’re not]. I always say that I'm perfectly imperfect. But I try every day to be the best person possible. And I feel like that really radiates through my body and makes me glow and makes me even more beautiful. So I think it's all internal.

Fill in the blank. I love my hair...

I love my hair when it's moisturized. I'm usually in braids or protective styles, but whether I'm in braids or my hair is out, or I'm washing it, I use a leave-in conditioner spray by Carol's Daughter, the black vanilla spray. I swear by it because it smells super duper good, and it makes my hair nice and soft, which I love.

What city or country gives you the greatest beauty inspiration?

This might be a little cliché because it's Maybelline New York, but I think it's New York. You find so much inspiration in New York as a whole. Everybody is free and unapologetic there and they are there to take up space. You’ll see somebody with a bright red lipstick or bushy brows or a crazy eyeliner, and I just love it.

What color are you loving on your nails these days?

I'm loving almond-shaped nails right now. I think it's a little bit more feminine than the square. Even though I do love a square acrylic, I just love something about an almond nail. My nail artist created this particular design I’m wearing today, but I've been seeing it all over TikTok and Instagram where people will have a sheer undercoat and then do these crazy designs or like something really fun. So that's what I went for and I'm loving it.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions, what would it be?

Oh, that's a loaded question. But I think the world as a whole, whether it's the entertainment industry, the beauty space, or whatever the case may be, I think beauty should be inclusive and it shouldn't just be catered to a certain thing, or a certain person, or a certain situation because we're all different. We're all unique and have different individuality. So to be able to accept that, know that, and feel good about being different is really cool.

You can only use three products for the rest of your life. What do you pick?

Moisturizer, because your face just can't be dry, so you have to have some moisturizer. Also the Colossal mascara from Maybelline, because my eyes need to be poppin'. And then my lips can't be dry. So whether that's just like a simple Chapstick or Vaseline or a lip gloss, those are my three staples.

What's your favorite moisturizer?

I use really simple products and really accessible products. That's why I love CeraVe—its moisturizers are really great. They have a nighttime moisturizer that's thicker, but my skin is typically really dry, so I don't use it in the night time, I use it in the morning that way I stay moisturized all day.

What's your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

I think that's ever-changing. It could be being in my room and turning my phone off and not responding to anybody. It could be listening to music. It could be with my friends and my family. But I’m just trying to define what self-care means for me. Sometimes that means you need to take a nap. I do love a good nap.

What's your favorite emoji?

The red heart, but not the generic original red heart. I’m talking about the one that is matte. I just feel like it’s more elegant and chic. It just looks really pretty to me.

What's your favorite getting-ready music?

I think anything Beyoncé. I think if you put on a Beyoncé playlist, you're bound to move. So if I want to move, if I want to get hyped on set or if I just need a pick me up, Beyoncé is coming on and I feel better about myself.

Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?

There are so many women in my life, like my mom, my two sisters, my aunts, and my adopted aunties, as I call them, like Ms. Ava and Ms. Oprah and the people who continuously pour into me. As for my peers, it’s Zendaya and so many other amazing humans that really give me hope and inspire me. They just continuously lift me up and empower me.
